Shelek lies in the Almaty Region, on the plain east of Almaty, where water coming down from the mountains is spread across farmland. The settlement takes its name from the Shelek river nearby. On a map it covers a wide area in low density, because houses sit on generous plots and the plots follow long, straight streets.
Seen from above, Shelek reads almost like a diagram of irrigation farming. Parallel streets run in one direction, cross streets are spaced widely, and a patchwork of fields and orchards surrounds it all. Many travellers pass through on the road toward Charyn Canyon, and that road crosses the settlement as a strong, continuous line.

The main road east of Almaty runs through Shelek toward Charyn Canyon and the border regions, and it is the dominant line on the map.
