Sherbrooke grew where the Magog and Saint-François rivers meet in Quebec's Eastern Townships, and those two rivers still organise its map. The Magog descends through a series of falls and gorges before joining the larger Saint-François. Just upstream it widens into Lac des Nations, a lake bordered by a promenade at the edge of downtown.
The terrain is hilly, so the street pattern changes from one neighbourhood to the next. The older districts near the rivers keep a fairly regular grid, while streets on the slopes bend to follow the contours. The Université de Sherbrooke occupies a large campus on high ground in the south-west, and parks follow the riverbanks through much of the city.
The city is known for its large outdoor murals, which bring scenes of local history onto building walls around the centre. A Sherbrooke map poster shows a city shaped by water and relief, with river bends, a lake and winding hillside streets all within a single frame.
