Shikang lies in the far south of Guangxi, on the low coastal plain near the Beibu Gulf, not far from the city of Beihai. Its map shows a compact built-up centre along the main roads, surrounded by flat countryside divided into fields, fish ponds and small watercourses. The pattern is gentle and irregular, typical of subtropical farming land close to the sea.
From above, the countryside is an interlocking mosaic of rectangular plots and open water, with village clusters set among them and narrow roads linking them to the town. That mix of solid and open shapes translates well into monochrome, where ponds and paddies appear as quiet blocks and the lanes thread between them in fine lines.
The surrounding county of Hepu has a long history as a port and trading area on China's southern coast.
