Shimen lies within the Chongqing municipality in southwest China, a region defined by steep hills, river valleys and terraced land. On a map the settlement forms a compact cluster, with roads bending to follow the contours of the ground. Very little here runs straight, and that gives the drawing a distinctive, flowing character.
Around the built-up area, the land is divided into small plots and scattered hamlets, typical of the hill country outside Chongqing's main city. Minor roads climb and descend between them, often winding in tight curves. In black and white these lines resemble contour drawings, even though they are simply the routes people have taken for generations.
