Shorewood is a village in Will County, Illinois, on the western edge of the Joliet area. The DuPage River winds through it from north to south, and on a map its looping course and wooded banks form the clearest natural line in an otherwise suburban landscape. Neighbourhoods spread out on both sides, connected by a handful of main roads.
Most of the village consists of residential subdivisions from recent decades. From above, they show the familiar suburban design of curving streets, cul-de-sacs and small ponds, set between larger arterial roads laid out on the Midwest's section grid. Farmland still lies at the edges, so the map shows the boundary where the suburb meets open prairie.
