Short Pump Map Poster & Print
Short Pump is a community in western Henrico County, Virginia, on the edge of the Richmond metropolitan area. It has no historic grid. Its map is built around a few large roads, with West Broad Street as the main spine and the interstate corridors nearby, and around them sits a spread of looping residential streets that end in cul-de-sacs.
The name is usually traced to an old tavern on the road west whose pump had a short handle, a small roadside detail that outlasted the building itself. Today the area is best known for its shopping, especially Short Pump Town Center. On the map it appears as a large block of parking and buildings next to the main road.
A Short Pump map poster is really a portrait of suburban drawing: winding subdivisions, curving collector roads and patches of woodland between neighbourhoods. In black and white those loops and dead ends form an almost ornamental pattern, which is very different from the straight blocks of an older city. That contrast makes it an interesting piece to hang next to a map of downtown Richmond.
