Siaya sits a few kilometres north of the equator in western Kenya, a compact county town where a handful of paved roads meet and then dissolve into a looser net of red-earth tracks. From above, the centre reads as a small cluster of blocks surrounded by homesteads, fields and scattered trees, with the land sloping gently toward the lowlands around Lake Victoria.
As the headquarters of Siaya County, the town gathers offices, markets and schools into its core, while everything beyond thins out quickly. That contrast is what gives a Siaya map poster its character: a clear knot of streets at the centre and a wide field of fine, branching lines around it, each one a path between farms, villages and the next market.
The county is Luo country and is widely known beyond Kenya as the home of Nyang'oma Kogelo, the village of Barack Obama's paternal family. Rivers crossing the county drain toward the lake and its wetlands, so at wider zooms the map picks up water, swamp edges and the long roads that link Siaya with Kisumu and neighbouring towns.
