Siem Reap follows the course of the Siem Reap River. The river runs roughly north to south through the town, and roads and lanes line both banks. On a map the older commercial centre around the Old Market sits close to the water. Guesthouses, hotels and residential streets spread out into flat land dotted with rice fields, ponds and small villages.
North of town the map changes character. Angkor Wat appears as a sharp rectangle inside its wide moat. Beyond it lie the square walls of Angkor Thom and the long straight edges of the ancient barays, the huge reservoirs built by the Khmer Empire. Few places show their past this clearly in plain geometry.
A Siem Reap map poster usually frames the living town and the gateway to the Angkor Archaeological Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To the south, the land slopes gently toward Tonlé Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Its seasonal floods shape the fields and settlements along that side of the town.
