Silkeborg lies in central Jutland, in one of Denmark's rare hilly and wooded areas. The Gudenå, the country's longest river, runs through the town and links a chain of lakes around it. From above, the built-up area is broken up by water and forest, with the town centre on the low land between lakes and neighbourhoods on the higher ground around them.
The town grew around a paper mill founded in the nineteenth century, and today it is known for its museums. The Silkeborg Museum displays the Tollund Man, a remarkably well-preserved Iron Age bog body found nearby, while Museum Jorn holds works by the painter Asger Jorn. Himmelbjerget, one of Denmark's best-known hills, is a short distance away.
A Silkeborg map poster is dominated by water. Lakes surround the town on several sides, the river winds between them, and bridges and causeways link the districts. In black and white the lakes become large pale shapes with irregular shorelines, and the town fits between them in a pattern that is unlike most Danish towns.
