Sirari lies in Tanzania's Mara region, right on the border with Kenya, facing the Kenyan town of Isebania across the frontier. It is an important overland crossing between the two countries, on the road that links the Lake Victoria region to western Kenya, and the town's form follows that function.
On a map the main road is the backbone. Shops, depots and houses line it, and smaller lanes branch off into residential areas on both sides. The border itself appears as the point where the road passes from one network to the other. Farmland and scattered homesteads spread out across the rolling ground around the town.
