Şırnak lies in the rugged mountains of southeastern Turkey, not far from the borders with Iraq and Syria. The town is built on sloping ground, and its map shows this plainly: streets follow the contours in long bending rows, switchbacks climb between neighbourhoods, and the built-up area is broken by ravines and ridges that no grid could cross.
Few places in the region are defined so completely by terrain. Roads leading out of town twist down into the valleys before reaching broader routes below, and the surrounding land is steep and sparsely settled. On a poster this makes a composition of layered curves rather than straight lines, a close portrait of a hillside town.
To the south rises Mount Cudi, which Islamic tradition often identifies as Al-Judi, the mountain where Noah's Ark came to rest. A Şırnak map poster keeps the town at the centre, but its long curving streets carry the same sense of height and distance that defines this mountain province.
