Slidell sits on the north-eastern shore of Lake Pontchartrain in St. Tammany Parish, across the water from New Orleans. The map is defined by water. The lake runs along the southern edge, bayous wind through neighbourhoods, and wide marshes stretch east toward the Pearl River and the Mississippi state line. Streets and subdivisions fill the higher ground in between.
The town is a crossroads for Interstates 10, 12 and 59, and their broad curves cut clearly across the map. To the south, the long twin bridges of I-10 carry traffic across the lake toward New Orleans East. Hurricane Katrina struck Slidell hard in 2005 and flooded many homes. Much of the town has since been rebuilt.
