Solna borders Stockholm to the north, and on a map the line between them is hard to find. Much of the municipality is open ground: Hagaparken and the shores of Brunnsviken, a long narrow inlet whose water runs through the eastern side, together with the wide green spaces of the Royal National City Park, which extends up toward Ulriksdal Palace.
Between these green areas lie dense districts of apartment blocks, office quarters and transport corridors. The main railway line and several motorways cross the municipality, and around Arenastaden the Strawberry Arena, Sweden's national stadium, forms a large oval next to the Mall of Scandinavia.
Solna is also home to Karolinska Institutet, whose Nobel Assembly selects the laureates in Physiology or Medicine, and to Norra begravningsplatsen, the large cemetery where Alfred Nobel is buried.
