Soma is in Manisa province, in western Turkey, in the upper basin of the Bakırçay river. The town sits in a valley surrounded by hills, and its streets spread along the valley floor and up the lower slopes. On the map, the built-up area is compact, with roads following the valley and open land around it.
Soma is known for lignite mining, which has shaped the town for decades. Mine sites and a large thermal power station lie close to the town, and their large plots appear clearly on the map. In 2014, a mine explosion here killed 301 workers, the worst mining disaster in Turkey's history, and it is remembered across the country.
