Somerset is a community within Franklin Township in central New Jersey, close to New Brunswick and the Raritan River. From above it is a classic postwar suburb: looping residential streets, cul-de-sacs and small parks set between a few straight arterial roads. Office parks and larger commercial sites add broad, simple blocks to the pattern, especially near the main highways.
To the west, the Delaware and Raritan Canal runs alongside the Millstone River, a nineteenth-century waterway whose towpath is now a long, narrow state park. On a Somerset map poster that pair of lines forms a calm edge against the busier network of streets. Toward the east the suburb meets the older, denser grid of the New Brunswick area.
The area grew with the highways that cross central New Jersey, and Interstate 287 passes close by, giving the map a strong diagonal. Between the arterials, each neighbourhood has its own internal logic of curves and dead ends. In black and white that produces a detailed, almost organic texture that looks very different from a city grid.
