South Whittier is an unincorporated community, not a city, and from above it reads as classic postwar Southern California. Straight residential streets fill the blocks between major arterials. Cul-de-sacs and short loops appear here and there, and the whole area joins neighbouring communities so smoothly that the border is hard to see on the ground.
Because it has no city government of its own, South Whittier is administered by Los Angeles County. It sits just south of the city of Whittier, in a band of suburbs that grew quickly across the former farmland and oil country of the region in the mid-twentieth century. The result is housing laid out at a very even rhythm.
