Southall lies in the London Borough of Ealing, between central London and Heathrow. Three strong lines cross its map. The Uxbridge Road runs east to west as the Broadway, the Great Western Main Line cuts through with Southall station, and the Grand Union Canal curves along the southern side. Terraced streets fill the space between them in tight rows.
Since the 1950s Southall has been one of Britain's best-known centres of Punjabi and wider South Asian life. It has large gurdwaras, including Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, one of the largest Sikh temples outside India, and long commercial streets packed with shops and restaurants. Its industrial past shows in the railway sidings and in former works sites along the canal and tracks.

The railway from Paddington to the west crosses the district in a long diagonal and splits the north from the south of Southall.
Grand Union Canal
The canal curves along the southern edge. Its towpath and locks add a softer line to the tightly packed terraced streets.
