Southport grew in the nineteenth century as a resort on the flat Lancashire coast north of Liverpool, and its plan still shows that ambition. The centre is organised around Lord Street, a broad, tree-lined boulevard known for its glass-canopied shopfronts. Long, straight residential streets run off it in a generous, almost gridded pattern of Victorian villas and terraces.
The seafront is where the map becomes unusual. The tide goes out a very long way across the flat sands, and Southport Pier, the second-longest in Britain, crosses the Marine Lake and the promenade toward water that is often far away. Sand dunes stretch south toward Ainsdale, and golf links, including Royal Birkdale, fill the coastal strip.
