Srivaikuntam lies on the banks of the Tamirabarani river in the Thoothukudi district of southern Tamil Nadu. It is known as a temple town. At its heart stands the Vaikuntanathar temple, dedicated to Vishnu, which is one of the Nava Tirupati shrines along this stretch of the river. On the map, the town gathers around the temple precinct close to the water.
The Tamirabarani is the lifeline of the region. At Srivaikuntam an old anicut, or weir, diverts water into irrigation channels. These feed the paddy fields and banana plantations that surround the town. From above, the channels and the fields they water make a fine, dense pattern, and the river runs broad and curving along the town's edge.
