State College grew up alongside Pennsylvania State University, and the map shows it plainly. The borough's downtown is a compact grid just south of the campus, with College Avenue running along the university's edge and Beaver Avenue parallel to it. North of that line, the street pattern changes to the curving paths, open lawns and large building footprints of University Park.
The town lies in Nittany Valley in central Pennsylvania, with Mount Nittany rising to the east and long wooded ridges running along the horizon. Beaver Stadium, one of the largest stadiums in the United States, sits on the eastern side of campus, and its oval shape is easy to spot from above. The nickname Happy Valley is used for the whole area.
