Sugar Land lies south-west of Houston in Fort Bend County, Texas, on flat land near the Brazos River. Its map is typical of a master-planned suburb. Winding residential streets, cul-de-sacs and loops are arranged around lakes, golf courses and parks, and major highways and a few straight arterial roads divide the city into large neighbourhoods.
The city takes its name from its sugar industry. Imperial Sugar operated a refinery here for more than a century, and the old char house still stands near the historic centre. Sugar Land has grown quickly in recent decades, adding a town square, offices and new districts while keeping the lakes and green corridors that shape its layout.
