Sūrajgarh lies in Jhunjhunu district, in the Shekhawati region of northern Rajasthan. The surrounding land is flat and sandy, and on the map the town stands out as a dense, compact settlement with roads radiating across open fields and scrub. The older core is a tangle of narrow lanes that bend and meet at small squares.
Like other Shekhawati towns, Sūrajgarh grew with the fortunes of merchant families, and the region is known for its havelis, courtyard houses often decorated with painted walls. The town also has a fort, and the lanes of the old quarter are arranged close around these historic buildings.
