Surovikino lies in Volgograd Oblast in southern Russia, on the Chir River, a tributary of the Don that flows through open steppe. On a map the river gives the town its main natural line. It bends through the landscape in loose curves, while the town's streets form a largely regular grid on the adjacent ground.
This is flat agricultural country, with wide fields stretching in every direction and settlements strung out along rivers and roads. A railway passes through the town, adding a straight line that cuts across the curves of the Chir, and the main roads link Surovikino to the rest of the region.
