Surubim is in the agreste of Pernambuco, the transition zone between the humid coast and the dry sertão of northeastern Brazil. The town sits on gently undulating land, and on the map it appears as a compact cluster of streets with roads spreading out across the open countryside.
The centre is arranged around squares and a main church, a typical pattern for towns in the region. Newer neighbourhoods extend along the approach roads, and the edges of the built-up area blend into small farms and pasture land.
