Svatove is a town in the north of Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine, set in open steppe country. It lies on the Krasna River, a small tributary of the Siverskyi Donets. The river valley, with its meadows and ponds, runs along one side of the town and is the only strong natural line in a gently rolling landscape.
The streets are laid out in a largely regular pattern of blocks. Long residential streets of houses and gardens surround a denser centre around the main public buildings. A railway passes through the town, and roads leave in several directions across farmland divided into large, straight-edged fields and lines of shelter-belt trees.
