Szczecinek is defined by water. The town lies between Lake Trzesiecko to the east and Lake Wielimie to the north, so from above the streets fill a strip of dry land squeezed between two large, irregular shorelines. The lakes take up as much of the map as the town, and their edges set the limits of the grid.
The town dates back to the early fourteenth century, founded in 1310 by a Pomeranian duke, and its centre still keeps the compact medieval layout around a market square. Trzesiecko is ringed by a walking path and park land that people use year-round, and the rail line and main roads run between the waterfronts, tying the town to the rest of West Pomerania.
