Tabira lies in the sertão of Pernambuco, in the Pajeú region of northeastern Brazil. This is semi-arid country, with thorny caatinga vegetation, rocky hills and rivers that flow strongly in the wet season and shrink in the dry months. The region is known across Brazil for its tradition of popular poetry and improvised verse.
