Tadley lies in north Hampshire, close to the Berkshire border, between Basingstoke and Reading. Most of the town grew in the second half of the twentieth century. Its map is a series of cul-de-sacs and crescents built around an older linear village, with patches of common land and heath left between the estates.
The town's growth is closely tied to the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston, whose large, fenced site lies just to the north. To the south and west, Pamber Forest and other woodland form a green boundary. That makes Tadley an unusually well-defined settlement, surrounded by open land on almost every side.
