Tagas lies in the province of Albay, in the Bicol Region of southern Luzon, on the lowland around Mayon Volcano. On a map, the settlement is a loose cluster of streets and houses along a few roads, surrounded by fields, streams and scattered neighbourhoods that merge into the wider urban area nearby.
Mayon, known for its near-perfect cone, dominates the landscape of this part of Albay. Its slopes shape the drainage of the whole area, with channels running down toward the plain and the coast. The communities around it have learned to live with the volcano, which has erupted many times in recorded history.
