Tai’an is a town within the municipality of Chongqing, in the western part of the Sichuan Basin, a region of low rolling hills, small rivers and intensively cultivated land. From above the town appears as a compact cluster of streets set into the undulating terrain, surrounded by a finely divided landscape of fields and scattered farmhouses.
In this part of China, settlement follows the lie of the land. Roads curve to keep to valley floors, fields step up the slopes in terraces, and the built-up area concentrates where the ground is level enough to support it. On a map the result is irregular and organic, quite different from the strict grids of newer Chinese cities.
