Ţalkhā lies in Dakahlia Governorate, on the west bank of the Nile's Damietta branch, opposite the city of Mansoura. The two are close enough to form a single urban area on the map, divided only by the river. Ţalkhā's streets run down to the water and meet the bridges that carry daily traffic across.
The town is known for its large fertiliser plant, one of the landmarks of industrial Dakahlia. On a map this shows as a wide block of geometric plots on the riverside. Beyond it, the Delta takes over: flat, intensively farmed land divided by canals and drains into a detailed pattern of fields.
