Tamalous lies in Skikda province in northeastern Algeria, inland from the Mediterranean coast, in the hilly country of the Tell Atlas foothills. On a map the town's streets bend to fit the terrain. The core is compact, and the roads leading out follow ridges and valleys instead of straight lines, so the whole plan has a soft, flowing quality.
The surrounding area is rural, with farmland, olive groves and wooded hills, and the town serves as a local centre for its district. Its shape reflects the land. Nothing is laid out on a rigid grid, and the edges of the built-up area follow contours and field boundaries.
