Tānda lies in the Rampur district of western Uttar Pradesh, on the broad, flat plain between the Himalayan foothills and the Ganges. The land here is level and intensively farmed. On a map the town looks like a dense cluster of lanes and small blocks, with roads running out through the fields to nearby villages and larger towns.
Like many market towns in the region, Tānda grew around trade in farm produce. It has no single planned grid. Instead, the old core is made of narrow, irregular streets that open onto wider roads. Newer housing extends along the main routes, so the outline of the town reaches out along each approach road rather than forming a neat circle.
