Tank sits on flat, open ground between the Indus lowlands and the first ridges of Waziristan. On a map the town is a tight knot of lanes and markets, with main roads leaving it in several directions across farmland and dry scrub. The contrast between the dense centre and the sparse country around it gives the drawing its character, and it stays legible even at small print sizes.
The town is the headquarters of Tank District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and has long been a meeting point between the hill country and the plains. Seasonal streams come down from the mountains and cross the surrounding land. They leave faint, braided lines that show up clearly once buildings and roads are reduced to black and white, adding movement to an otherwise level landscape.
