Tarqui is a municipality in the department of Huila, in southern Colombia. Huila holds the upper valley of the Magdalena River, the country's main waterway, and is one of Colombia's leading coffee-growing departments. Tarqui shares that landscape of steep, green slopes, farms and small towns linked by winding mountain roads.
The town centre follows the colonial pattern common in Colombia: a regular grid of square blocks arranged around a central plaza. From this compact core, roads leave in several directions and immediately start to bend with the terrain, climbing towards farms and villages or dropping towards the valley.
A Tarqui map poster sets this tidy grid against the rough land around it. The dense square blocks in the centre give way to curving rural roads and open hillside, so the composition shows both the order of the town plan and the shape of the Andean foothills around it.
