Taza sits in the corridor known as the Taza Gap, the natural passage between the Rif mountains to the north and the Middle Atlas to the south. From above, the town divides into two clear parts: the old medina on a hilltop, enclosed by walls and dense with narrow lanes, and the newer town spread across lower ground with more regular streets.
For centuries the gap made Taza a strategic point on the route between eastern Morocco and Fez, and its walls reflect that role. To the south lies Tazekka National Park, with its cedar forests and limestone landscapes, reached by winding mountain roads.
A Taza map poster captures that two-level character. The medina is a tight, irregular cluster on its height, the lower town a looser, more orderly spread, and the roads between them wind up the slope. The contrast gives the composition a strong sense of place.
