Tebesbest sits next to Touggourt in the Oued Righ, a long chain of oases in Algeria's northern Sahara. The two towns almost run together, and on a map they form one continuous settlement surrounded by palm gardens. Beyond the gardens there is nothing but desert. Few places show the edge between cultivated land and sand as clearly.
Oasis towns follow their own logic. Older quarters tend to be compact and inward-looking, with narrow lanes that keep out the sun. Newer districts are more open and regular. Around them, palm plots are divided into small irregular parcels, fed by wells and channels. In monochrome, this gives a distinctive fine grain between the town and the empty ground beyond.
