Tekkalakote is a town in Ballari district in northern Karnataka, on the semi-arid plateau of the Deccan. The surrounding land is flat to gently rolling, interrupted by the granite hills and boulder outcrops typical of this part of India. On a map the town appears as a dense cluster of lanes, with roads and field boundaries spreading out across agricultural land.
The area is known to archaeologists for early settlement, and excavations near the town have documented Neolithic and Chalcolithic occupation. That long human presence is part of a wider landscape in the Tungabhadra region, where rocky hills and river valleys have supported farming communities for thousands of years.
