Tel Sheva‘ lies in Israel's Southern District, a short distance east of Beersheba, on the open, dry plain of the northern Negev. On a map the town looks planned rather than grown. It is divided into separate neighbourhoods, each with its own curving internal streets, linked by a few main roads and surrounded by empty land.
It was established in the late 1960s as one of the first planned towns for the Bedouin population of the Negev, and the neighbourhood layout was meant to accommodate extended family groups. The town is closely connected with Beersheba, whose outskirts and road network appear toward the edge of the map.
A Tel Sheva‘ map poster has a distinctive rhythm: clusters of streets separated by open ground, arranged around a simple network of main roads. In monochrome, the neighbourhoods look almost like cells, and the surrounding desert provides generous empty space around them.
