Teocaltiche Map Poster & Print
Teocaltiche is a town in the Altos region of northern Jalisco, close to the borders with Zacatecas and Aguascalientes. It sits on a highland plateau cut by river valleys. The town follows the traditional Mexican pattern: a central plaza surrounded by a grid of streets that loosens as it spreads outward into newer neighbourhoods.
The name comes from Nahuatl, and the area has deep pre-Hispanic roots. Archaeologists use the term Teocaltiche style for a group of ceramic figures from the region's ancient shaft tombs, now held in museum collections. Many families from Teocaltiche have also emigrated to the United States, giving the town strong ties to communities north of the border.
