Terni Map Poster
Terni sits in a broad basin in southern Umbria, where the Nera river flows in from the east on its way toward the Tiber. On a map the river cuts a clear line through the urban area, with the historic centre on its south bank and newer districts spread across the valley floor, while wooded hills close in on every side.
Terni has been a centre of heavy industry since the late nineteenth century, when steelworks and an arms factory were established here, and it is still known as the city of steel. The large industrial complex east of the centre is one of the biggest shapes on the map. Heavily bombed in the Second World War, much of the city was rebuilt afterwards.
A few kilometres east, the Cascata delle Marmore drops in three stages, a waterfall first created by the Romans to drain the plain around Rieti. Terni is also the city of Saint Valentine, its early bishop and patron. The steel plant forms a vast block of sheds, yards and rail sidings on the eastern side, a geometric mass that contrasts with the finer grain of the historic streets.
Historic centre
The old core keeps a tighter, more irregular street pattern around its squares and churches, still the densest area on the map despite post-war rebuilding.
