Tharād is a town in the Banaskantha area of northern Gujarat, not far from the Rajasthan border and the desert country to the west. The land is flat and dry for much of the year. From above, the town forms a tight core of streets and markets, surrounded by open fields crossed by long, straight rural roads.
The town is a trading centre for a wide area of farms and grazing land, where crops depend on irrigation and the seasonal rains and livestock has long mattered. The map reflects that role. Main roads meet at the centre, and the land around town is divided into large fields with villages scattered between them.
