Ba Chẽ township is the administrative centre of Ba Chẽ district in Quảng Ninh province, in north-eastern Vietnam. The district is mountainous and heavily forested, and the town lies along a river valley between ridges. On a map, the built-up area is long and narrow, following the river and the main road rather than spreading outward.
Streets and houses cluster on the flatter ground close to the water, while steep slopes rise on either side. Roads leave the town along the valley and climb into the hills, connecting to other parts of the province, including the coastal areas around Hạ Long Bay to the south-east.
