Thuận Thanh lies in Bắc Ninh province, on the flat, water-rich land of the Red River delta east of Hanoi. The Đuống River runs along its northern edge, and the rest of the area is a patchwork of rice paddies, ponds and village clusters linked by narrow roads. On a map, it reads as a scattered, finely textured landscape rather than a single dense town.
The area holds some of the oldest sites in northern Vietnam. Luy Lâu, an ancient citadel and early centre of Buddhism in the region, lay here, and Dâu Pagoda is often described as one of the country's oldest temples. Đông Hồ village, known for its woodblock folk paintings, is also in Thuận Thanh.
