Tindouf lies in the far southwest of Algeria, close to the borders with Morocco, Western Sahara and Mauritania. From above, the town is a patch of streets and compounds surrounded by the hamada, a vast stony desert plateau. There are no rivers or coastlines, only the edges of the built area against empty ground.
Its remoteness shapes the map. Long roads leave the town across the desert, and an airfield with long runways sits nearby. The town grew around an oasis and earlier trading routes, and its layout mixes older, denser quarters with broad planned districts.
Tindouf is widely known for the Sahrawi refugee camps in the surrounding province, which have existed since the 1970s. A Tindouf map poster shows the town as a sharp, isolated shape in the desert, a striking subject for a minimalist print.
