Tiptūr is a town in Tumkur district in southern Karnataka, on the open plateau between Bengaluru and the Western Ghats. It is best known for coconuts. The surrounding taluk is one of the state's major coconut-growing areas, and Tiptur's markets have long been a centre for the copra trade. The town's economy and its landscape are both shaped by that crop.
From above, Tiptur is a compact market town with a dense core of streets around the commercial centre and the railway. Main roads run out from it toward neighbouring towns. Beyond the built-up area, the map opens into farmland, groves and scattered village tanks, the small reservoirs common on the Karnataka plateau.
