Tirumangalam is a town in Madurai district, Tamil Nadu, south-west of the city of Madurai. It lies on flat plains broken by scattered rocky hills, the typical landscape of this part of southern Tamil Nadu. From above, the town takes shape along the main roads. Busier routes run through it, and residential streets fill the blocks between them.
Its position has long made it a junction, with roads heading south towards the rest of Tamil Nadu and west towards the hills. The centre has the dense lanes and market streets of an older town. Newer areas spread along the roads, and tanks, the traditional irrigation reservoirs of the region, appear as open water shapes on the edges.
