Tiruvankod, also written Thiruvithamcode, lies in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, close to Thuckalay and the border with Kerala. The land here is humid and heavily planted, and from above the town shows as a loose web of lanes set among trees, ponds and fields rather than a tightly packed centre.
The town is known for its Arappally, a small church that local tradition links to Saint Thomas the Apostle and counts among the oldest in India. The name of the place is also often connected with that of the former kingdom of Travancore. Both show how closely this corner of southern India is tied to the region's past.
