Tonekābon lies on the western coast of Mazandaran, on the narrow strip of lowland between the Caspian Sea and the steep, forested wall of the Alborz. The town was known as Shahsavar until 1979. Its streets run along the main coastal road and down toward the shore, forming a compact centre surrounded by rice fields, orchards and tea gardens.
A river flows down from the mountains through the town and into the sea, dividing the street pattern and adding a winding line to the map. Inland, the valleys known as Do Hezar and Se Hezar lead deep into the Alborz and are popular with visitors for their forests and cool air.
