Torrejón de Ardoz lies east of Madrid, in the Henares corridor that runs toward Alcalá de Henares and Guadalajara. From above, the city forms a compact block of streets, with the A-2 motorway passing alongside and industrial areas spreading along the main roads. To one side lies the large, clearly defined area of the Torrejón air base, with its long runways.
The air base was once used by the United States Air Force and is now operated by the Spanish Air Force, and its runways dominate the map around the city. Torrejón is also known for the Parque Europa, a large park featuring replicas of famous European monuments. The city grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century with Madrid's expansion.
